Skiing at Mt.Hutt
(View of MtHutt from our appartment)

Whilst you guys in Europe have been having the most amazing spring & summer so far, New Zealand is having it's coldest winter in 72 years. Trust us to go from winter in the UK to another one here!
We’ve just come back from a ‘skiing’ holiday that turned out a lot different from what we intended. Nothing broken or anything like that, more in the way of ‘lack of skiing’.
South Island ski resorts have had amazing snowfalls this winter. So with Lianne having 2 week school winter holiday, we decided to fly south to Mt.Hutt (where I’d last been 28yrs ago!) for a short week with 4 days of skiing.
On our 1st day we were told that the resort was closed due to high winds, and the fairly treacherous road you need to take to get to the pistes. We managed to rent the last available car in the village, and set of for the day, exploring the immediate region. We soon discovered that apart from the beauty of the scenery around us, there isn't actually anything to do when you can't ski. The most exciting event of the day was getting stuck in a herd of sheep as they were being moved across the highway (!) to another field.
Unfortunately the 2nd day was a similar story, but this time we headed to Christchurch instead, where we went to the Antarctic Centre, which turned out to be very interesting for us and fun for the kids.
The 3rd day there was still quite a lot of wind but we managed to get up the mountain. Lianne had a lesson and did great, Amy went into the creche for a few hours and Andy & I managed to do 1 chairlift (only one open . . .) 4 times – not realising that would be it for us for the whole holiday!!
This as our last day was ‘snowed off’, we did get up on the mountain but the weather was so bad
we had to come back down by 1pm. Lianne did manage another lesson and was very proud about going up on her first chairlift!! We're really proud of her, she did great. So all in all, a very expensive ‘non-holiday’. If we manage to go next year, we’ll go to a different resort for sure.
